Verizon and Unions Reach Agreement by EmploymentCrossing.com | 08-11-2008
Verizon Communications announced Sunday it reached a tentative agreement with their two major unions avoiding a potential strike. The three-year contracts include a total 11 percent pay raise with the company continuing to pay 100 percent of current employees and retired workers health premiums.
The two main unions, the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, decided to set a strike deadline for Monday when negotiations continued past Friday’s contract deadline. The averted strike would have involved 65,000 Verizon employees along most of the East coast.
The increases will be spread throughout the three-year contract at 3.25 percent the first year and 3.5 and 3.75 percent increases in the next two years. T
The agreement also grants union recognition to 600 installation and maintenance technicians.
Outsourcing has become one of the most common trends in the telecom industry. At almost every stage of the telecommunications process, jobs are held overseas, particularly in countries like India. The high-tech capabilities of the cities and the ability to pay workers very little have combined to make outsourcing extremely profitable for companies like Verizon.
Verizon & the Union Workers
In early August Verizon workers in Albany, New York were prepared to go on strike over their contract negotiations.
Telecommunications is defined as ''the transmission of encoded sound, pictures, or data over significant distances, using radio signals or electrical or optical lines.'' Clearly the field encompasses a great deal of employment opportunities classified under telecom jobs.
The name might make some of these types of jobs obvious, however, not all that are included in this generalization are what you would typically think of as telecom jobs. From the help desk representative to the telephone sales person, there are many jobs in this field that pay well.
Silicon Valley Loses Jobs in July; California Unemployment Rate Rises to 7.3%; EmploymentCrossing Unperturbed
Pasadena, CA — Silicon Valley is facing a rare occurrence as the region has suffered its first yearly job loss since July of 2004, thanks in large part to the bursting of the housing bubble. In the one-year period ending in July, the high-tech mecca lost 1,400 jobs, or 0.2%, marking its first decline in four years. Meanwhile, California’s overall jobless rate crept to 7.3% in the month of July, while the so-called misery index for the state, which refers to the rate of unemployment combined with the rate of inflation, topped 12%. Nonetheless, EmploymentCrossing’s figures give good cause to be untroubled by the reported depletion of jobs in California.
