Layoff News
The cuts have been coming fast in the reeling newspaper industry. This time it is The Florida Times-Union, which this week said it has eliminated 26 positions, or 6 percent of its staff.
Publisher Lucy Talley attributed the cuts to declines in advertising revenue, which the paper projects will continue through 2011.
Eight of the positions eliminated were in the newsroom and four of the affected employees are being reassigned to other positions in the company. According to reports, employees who were laid off received a week’s pay for each year worked.
The Florida Times-Union is owned by Augusta, Ga.-based Morris Publishing Group. The company, which operates 13 daily newspapers, emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in March.
