Home electronic service technicians are unlike telecommunication subcontractors who repair phone lines, move them to different locations, or repair wall jacks, cable, or satellite service. Home electronic service technicians repair smaller electronic gadgets, which are brought in such as DVD players, televisions, and video cameras. Home electronic service techs may also travel to do home repairs such as security systems, satellite dishes, and surround sound installation. Those who purchase these items cannot install home electronic equipment themselves; the increasingly complicated electronic equipment needs qualified professionals for installation. Many elaborate home entertainment systems need the help of those who are proficient in electronic tools, for their installation.

Some service technicians specialize in a particular type of electronic service such as audio installation in vehicles, home theater systems, or home security systems. With new home electronics, such as high definition televisions, DVD players, stereo systems, etcetera hitting the market regularly, those who are trained in the latest technologies to repair and perform general maintenance will get ample opportunities for the best service technician jobs. These new home electronic items, which are reaching new quality heights, can be rather expensive. Therefore, customers are willing to have these items repaired by quality service technicians.

The average earning of service technicians may range from $13.00 per hour to $22.00 depending upon experience, location, and specialty. More complicated systems, which require additional training will earn higher wages. There are currently around 40,000 service technicians and this number is expected to rise slightly within the next decade to just over 41,000.

As far as training is concerned the service technicians usually educate themselves in vocational schools or they acquire it on-the- job. Those who wish to further their career as a service technician can earn certification through programs from Electronic Technicians Association International, and Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association or CEDIA. The CEDIA will allow those who become certified to perform various home electronic installations such as home automation/communication systems, media rooms, entertainment systems, integrated lighting control, security, and HVAC systems. Those who do in-home costume entertainment systems will also need good communication skills to explain in detail how all these electronics work to the consumer. Those who do advance in their service technician careers may become managers or supervisors and train others.

Home security systems are extremely important for the safety of the homes and many want to invest in high quality systems to ensure their families’ protection. Home service technicians can also become certified in home security systems. Protecting ones home is one of the best investments a person can make; and qualified home security service technicians should be hired to provide you with the best possible security. Brinks Home Security Installation Quality Certification is one certificate- training program that allows you to practice the highest standards in home electronic security and life safety systems. Security service technicians also need to pass the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association programs, which include a variety of certifications including Certified Alarm Technician Level 1, Certified Alarm Technician, and Advanced Alarm Technician. The NBFAA also offers an apprenticeship program for those who want to train and earn wages at the same time.

Like in home electronic systems, security systems are constantly evolving and becoming more complicated so it is important to stay current with the latest technologies. Home security service technicians will evaluate a home to see what type of home security system is needed for the best possible protection.

Home security service technicians’ wages will depend on level of training, experience, and location. Those who install sophisticated, complex security systems in large buildings will earn more than those security service technicians who are involved with installations at homes. Those who have gained experience may become security sales representatives.

The economy plays a huge role in the demand for service technicians. High-end home electronic systems may suffer in sales when the economy is going down; customers will refrain from purchasing new home electronics. In addition, many home electronic stores may close due to lack of sales, which will lead to a rise in unemployment in this field. Those who work for home electronic entertainment may find themselves with less work because of the slowing housing market as well. The housing crisis will, however, not last forever so those who do become service technicians and have the latest in audio/video training will have the best opportunities to sustain a steady work schedule.

Majority of service technicians jobs, whether electronic home entertainment installation or security alarm installation, work a typical 40 hour week but overtime might be necessary for those involved with larger projects.
